Nicknamed ´The City of Eternal Spring´, Medellin enjoys a delightfuly mild climate all year round, perfect for a few days of visiting the many cultural and historical sites as well as world-class bars and restaurants.
Popular activites in and around the city include a stroll through the Plaza Botero, a visit to the countries biggest butterfly sanctuary (note that Colombia has the largest variety of butterfly species in the world), a ride to the top of the surrounding mountains on the Cable metro or a contraversial Pablo Escobar tour.
More than anything, it is the people of Medellin that will win your heart. In a country internationally admired for the beauty and friendliness of its people, Medellin is the city most celebrated by Colombians themselves for these assets.
Medellin´s nightlife is often considered the best in Colombia, with everything from swanky rooftop cocktail lounges to hole-in-the-wall ´shot´ bars boasting phonebook thick menu´s of different colorful shooters.
The city is one of the plastic surgery capitals of the world so be prepared for fake boobs and bums almost everywhere you look. Medellin also throws several fantastic festivals, including the Medellin Flower Fair, with the biggest outdoor flower parade on the planet.
Medellin is filled with many beautiful parks such as Pueblito Paisa located on top of one of Medellin’s hills giving you a panoramic view of the city.
There are countless museums to loose your-self in such as Colombia’s second-oldest museum, El Museo de Antioquia where you can find a permanent exhibition of Colombia’s very own famous artist Fernando Botero and Santa Fe de Antioquia, a town declared a national monument with various churches and more museums to enjoy.
Parque Explora can’t be missed; a large scientific-theme park with over 300 interactive activities to partake in as well as Colombia’s largest aquarium displaying 400 species of fresh and salt water species, plus reptiles and amphibious creatures all in environmental settings such as the Amazon.
During the months of August, the Flower fair in Medellin has gained international notice for its brilliant and vibrant festivity.
Balconies, streets, and gardens are abundantly decorated with flowers and the people of Antioquia celebrate with over 140 traditional and cultural events, such as singing duels, musical and cultural performances, horse fair and dog parade, most talented woman contest, car parade, just to name a few.
A special parade to bring in the crowds and to done a spectacular array of flowers is the Silleteros Parade; the Silleteros are what the people wear; a construction on their back and forehead which is adorned with hundreds of flowers. (The Silleteros were also used in old times in this department to carry people through the mountains).
Approximately 82 km from Medellin is El Peñol, literally meaning ‘the rock’ a 200 meter high rock formation at the edge of the Embalse de Peñol Lake. You can climb up stairs to the top and witness an incredible view of the impressive landscapes of this area.
It is a favorite weekend destination for city goers who like to unwind biking, fishing, boating, kayaking or relaxing beside the sunny lakeside. Near here you can also pass through the picturesque pastel colored town of Guatape.
Best time to go – Average temperature here is 27° C making it a great trip destination any time. Perfect for lakeside activities in the outdoors, so bring suitable clothing for such, however warmer clothing for nights is needed.
In Medellin, light clothing is recommended for morning and afternoon and evening to keep on hand a sweater or jacket as the temperature drops slightly
By plane – International Airport of Medellin Jose Maria Cordova receives daily flights from Panama, Ecuador and other major cities in South America and Europe, and it receives several flights a day from the city of Bogotá. Within the City - The best way to know Medellín are taxis, some table has price and others do not, therefore it is advisable to check before you take it or ensure the rate they will charge. Also included is the subway line that runs through much of the city.
