Who would have thought that what, for more than 23 years, used to be a maximum security prison is now a wonderful natural and tourist park. his is the case of the Isla Gorgona or Gorgona Island, a sylvan archipelago, known worldwide as one of the best destinations for eco tourism activities, extreme excursions and water sports such as scuba diving. Gorgona Island is one of the “must-do” trips for national and international tourists.
With 24 square kilometers, this ecological paradise is made up of a total of two Islands (Gorgona and Gorgonilla) and three smaller islets like the El Islote de El Viudo islet. This set of Islands offers a great diversity of fauna and flora, exuberant material for ecological and academic tours, and a myth and legend rich history. The small Island of Gorgona is located in the Pacific Ocean, in the Department of Cauca, approximately 35 km away from the continental shelf, in a beautiful place of Colombia where to enjoy vegetation and scuba diving between coral reefs. Tourists who have the pleasure of visiting Gorgona Island, may also get to know the cities of Cali , Popayán and the famous zone of La Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City).
The rainiest months of the year are September and October, and those with less precipitation are February and March. There is no dry season; Gorgona has 90% humidity, and the average temperature is 27º C. These climatic characteristics (high humidity) are due to the fact that 85% of this area of Colombia is made up of thick rainforest. The fauna in Gorgona Island includes a rich variety of reptiles, sea turtles and alligators, as well as countless species such as dolphins, porpoises, sperm whales and humpback whales, which inhabit or arrive at this place of Colombia to take advantage of these optimal currents and the large amount of food. In 1984 the Island of Gorgona was declared a UNESCO world heritage. Likewise, the following year, the Government of Colombia recognized this island as a National Natural Park.
Gorgona was discovered by Diego de Almagro in 1524, and it was named after the Greek mythology “gorgons” or devil-women that had snakes for hair, because of the vast amount of reptiles found in the area, with similar traits to those of these mythological women.
This destination of Colombia offers tourists plenty of plans; it is a privileged site for marine activities and scuba diving lovers. Visitors will have the opportunity of observing Whitetip Sharks, manta rays, fish of all colors and shapes, giant turtles and the majestic humpback whales. Similarly, in this tropical rainforest of this Island you can make plans to admire sloths, white faced monkeys, exotic blue lizards, and hundreds of reptile and bird species. After five in the afternoon, it is not recommended to take walks in Gorgona, since serpents start to come out during that time and it is better to leave them alone, not to alter their ecosystem.
For ecological walks inside Gorgona Island, it is recommended to wear long pants, in order to avoid mosquito bites, as well as rubber boots to prevent snake bites. Don´t forget to bring waterproof jackets for rain protection purposes.
From Buenaventura (Department of Valle), the tour lasts about 12 hours, or from Guapi (Department of Cauca), it takes 1 hour and a half of navigation to get to Gorgona . To travel to the Island of Gorgona, you need to be vaccinated against yellow fever.
