Bogotá, the South American city that never sleeps! Graceful churches, excellent museums, cultural events and a fantastic night life will keep you more than busy. Despite the urban feel of Bogotá it definitely doesn’t lack greenery and with its beautiful backdrop of the Andes Mountains this popular city has a lot to offer.
Bogotá the fourth largest city in South America is currently a modern metropolis with nearly seven million inhabitants, covering approximately 33,000 hectares. Thanks to technical advances inherent to large cities, and a substantial transformation in the past eight years, Bogotá is now a friendly, splendid city offering rich and varied cultural life. A city providing all modern life services and comforts required, without giving up its air of past colonial times, which have been preserved by its traditional neighborhoods.
With hundreds of monuments, museums, churches, universities, art galleries, libraries, parks, shopping centers, night clubs, bars, pubs, and restaurants, it is the perfect place to visit!
Don’t forget to visit The Gold Museum (El Museo Del Oro) in the center of the city which has 34,000 pieces of precious metal and 20,000 objects of diverse Pre-Colombian cultures.
A must see in Bogotá is definitely Monserrate, a beautiful white church perched up high on one of the mountain ranges overlooking Bogotá. Along with the church there are a couple of restaurants with breathtaking views. There are three different ways to get to the top of Monserrate day and night; cable car, railway or on foot along a path (the latter day time only).
Don’t miss walking around La Candelaria, a charmingly rustic and historic neighborhood in downtown. The architecture of the old houses, churches and buildings are of Spanish Colonial and Baroque styles. It houses several universities, libraries and museums. A list of must-see spots are: The Bolivar Square (Plaza de Boliviar), The National Capitol (Capitolio Nacional), The Primate Cathedral (Catedral Primada), The Justice Palace (Palacio de Justicia), and the Palace of the Archbishop, the Lievano Building (Edificio Lievano) and the Palace of Nariño (Casa de Nariño).
But for a little action at night time the best place to go is the famous Andres Carne De Res or Andres Beef (ACR). ACR offers a completely unique experience you won’t get any where else in the world. Just a 30-45 minute ride outside of Bogota in Chía. But don’t let the distance discourage you, the ride is well worth it. Like the name says, its specialty is serving mind blowing steaks and other typical Colombian foods. Doubling as a restaurant and party spot you won’t get bored dancing to Colombian party music or dancing to music spun by internationally known DJs.
Getting around
Transmilenio - Don’t waste time in heavy traffic while traveling, take the Transmilenio Buses that run on lines from station to station. Fast, safe and easy. But be careful around rush hour the buses get VERY busy.
Taxi - Getting around by taxi is the easiest way to navigate Bogotá. Taxis can be called on the street or for a safer option, called by phone. Be sure to ask about the fare before getting in as they can vary or check to see if they have a price – card that are available in some taxis. Getting a taxi on weekends during the nights might take longer because of the high demand so plan your time around it.
Bus - Traveling by bus in Bogotá for a traveler may be a bit difficult. Seeing as there aren’t actually any bus stops. Much like a taxi you wave a bus down when you see it.
Bike - Sundays and special holidays are perfect days for riding a bike through out the city although mainly in the north, as a lot of the main roads close and are open only for bikers, skaters and pedestrians.
Dress code - Contrary to popular belief, Bogotá can have a very cold climate. Bogotá during the day can be beautiful and sunny but at times after the sun has comes out, a chilly cold wind can appear later at night so be sure to pack a jacket and closed toe shoes.
