A nice alternative to the popular Playa Blanca and Islas Rosarios, Tierrabomba is a feet up fishing island just 5km off the coast of Cartagena. It´s white sand, clean water and healthy palm trees make for a more relaxing day on the beach than Cartagena´s busy Boca Grande, where people selling everything from oysters to massages can get a little tiring at times.
Apart from its gorgeous beaches, Tierrabomba is a great place to find incredibly rich and vibrant Afro-Colombian culture, characterized by its happy-go-lucky attitude. Fishing, eating, dancing and chilling seems like the daily routine of life on Tierrabomba. This is a place to let a deck chair take your weight, slap on some sun lotion, sip on a coconut and save the stress of the city for the skyline.
Way down the southern tip the island does have its own relic of historical importance – the San Fernando Fort, one of the most impressive works of military engineering in Cartagena. The site is well preserved and inscriptions dating back to 1781 can be found on the cold walls of its ancient dungeons.
To visit Tierrabomba, boats leave from the Cartagena mainland (in front of the Hilton Hotel) every 30-45 minutes and the 10 minute ride costs around $4. For those who want to stay overnight, there is a small collection of comfortable hotels, bungalows and restaurants. To check out other secret hotspots on Colombia´s Caribbean Coast click here.
