Living in Colombia – Fulfilling the Colombian Dream

My name is Ernesto Schmidt-Mumm and I´m currently working at Mantaraya Travel as the Marketing Director and Web Specialist.

My motivation for living in Colombia came from my interest in learning about my roots. My father was born in Colombia after his father moved here from Germany in 1903. Still I haven’t figured out the reason why my grandfather chose Colombia but what I do know is that he opened one of the first glasses shops in the country, Optica Alemana, which is still well-known today for the high quality that my grandad installed in the business.

My father was the only son who moved back to Germany, while the rest of the family stayed here in Colombia. When my father arrived in Germany he started a carrer as eye specialist. With all of the great stories about Colombia that he used to tell me and the Colombian influences that he brought into my childhood (at home we listened to more Vallenato, Cumbia, Salsa and Merengue than German folkloreic songs) I began to develop an interest in Colombian culture. I knew that at one point I wanted to spend time in Colombia. Sadly, my father didn´t teach us Spanish, so I had to go about learning it myself. Once I mastered Spanish and finished my studies in Germany, I took the chances and came to Colombia to live my dream.

Visit Bogota and take a tour to Monserate and Candelaria

Monserate and Candelaria are one of the main attractions in Bogota. Hansa Tours invited us to their tour and we had the chance see by ourself how amazing the two sites are.

Why to go to Monserate and Candelaria?

First of all I must admit that I haven’t been to Monserate although I am living here in Bogota for more than a year. So when I heard that Hansa Tours invited us to one  of their city tours I had to go to see Monserate by myself. I’ve have seen a lot go great pictures about this place and the incredible view over Bogota. I will just list some reasons why should visit these places:

Get the best Tamales in Colombia

Who likes Tamales?

source: wikipedia

Tamales are a typical latin american dish and also very famous in Colombia. They can be filled with many different things like chicken, meat, pork, vegetables and always with the corn-based “masa” and each region has there own style.

If you happen to be in Colombia then you should pay a visit to the city Ibagué in the state of Tolima because today the people celebrate this delightful dish and it would be the perfect opportunity to try it.

Anyways my personal favorite are the Tamales de Pipian. Whats your favorite Tamales?
